How can I better support DH in his career?
My husband works 60+ hours a week at a restaurant and the job is very stressful. It’s part of a chain and corporate staff was just cut by 60%. They sent out a letter stating all bonuses will be cut through the end of the year, and they’ve stopped contributing to 401ks. We’re already down $12k from where we were last year at this time because bonuses were cut down, and now they’re gone entirely.

To boot, the company has sent senior managers by about four times in the past month to pick apart the whole restaurant, and he’s been given a final written notice (2 out of 3) for letting staff get out of hand. He says that because I keep telling him to find another job, his morale has been down and its been hurting his work. I really was trying to help because, personally, I think they’ve been trying to get him to quit with really unreasonable demands. I really do think that regardless of how well he does, he’s eventually going to lose his job, and in the meantime they are working him to death, taking away his perks and taking him away from his family (including our new baby).

The fact is that he doesn’t care either way. He would rather be fired than quit. He wants to get the restaurant into a position where it works perfectly, and then – possibly – put in applications elsewhere. This guy was rookie manager and manager of the year his second year. He doesn’t want to leave on a sour note, and I completely understand that. NOW. And I feel like crap, and am not exactly sure what I can do to help him feel better about his job.

What I did today was text him after he got to work and ask him what good things he noticed when he got there. Hopefully help him focus on the positives. One thing was done especially well, so I told him he might want to pull aside whoever did it and point out their good job, that that might make him feel like a better leader, too, as he’s struggled lately with "being a dick" for results.

What else can I do?

You are doing the correct thing by concentrating on the positive. help hi to relax a little on the job, because when staff see their manager being stressed and edgy, they feel the same because they don’t know if it is because of their work.

Tell him to go around and compliment everyone on something done correctly or efficiently – there MUST be at least one thing done right during the day for each person.

Tell him to be cheerful, and upbeat. this may even help him to enjoy the job more.

And his attitude toward customers must ALWAYS be friendly, cheerful, and positive. customers see that, and will feel good, and return.

Ask him to put a suggestion box in the front reception area, so customers ( and staff ) can make suggestions to improve the place.

And show him LOTS of support and love when he returns at the end of the day. Men come home tired and exhausted, and the last thing they need to meet is a complaining and unhappy wife. meet him with a smile, kisses, and a nice drink.

If the husband is happy at home, he will be most likely happy at work. You must also work – to give him a happy environment at home. Do not nag him, and be loving always.

He will look forward to going home each day, and will be happier in overall mood.
