what are some GOOD books that are set in a foreign country?
I need to read a book for school that takes place in a country other than America.
I’ve searched online and all the books I find are childish or about the war.
I want a book that is more grown up, but not historical. I’ve already been suggested A Thousand Splendid Suns and The Kite Runner but they seem too.. war time. And I’ve been told P.S. I Love You, but that one is too girly and that is overrated.
I’m a junior so that might be of help.
any suggestions?
thank you to whoever helps, it means a lot [:

Death on the Nile (Europe & Egypt)
Agatha Christie

Strangers & Sojourners (Canada)
Father Elijah (Italy)
A Cry of Stone (Canada & Europe)
all of the above by: Michael D. O’ Brien

HARRY POTTER IS NOT CHILDISH!!!!!!!!! Now that I got that out of my system, The Chronicles of Narnia are good and take place in England. Endymion Spring takes place in 1400’s right after Gutenberg invents the printing press, my friend tells me it is good.

I’m a junior, too. :)

One book that my friend and I enjoyed was called This Is All. It’s very intelligent without being convoluted. It takes place in England and follows the story of a nineteen-year-old girl who is pregnant with her first child, a daughter. So she sets out to write her autobiography for her daughter and in it she discusses the funny times that she had growing up, the serious ones (she lost her mother and was once attacked by one of her friend’s friends), and all of the lessons that she learns along the way in life. There are times where it’s obvious that the author is trying to make it powerful- it’s not subtle about its life lessons, but it’s still wonderful, albeit it’s very…uh…graphic and descriptive about her first romantic relationship, so if you don’t want to read about that, it might not be for you.

Also, I think that you should try Don Quixote, which, albeit it’s set in a time that is now considered historical, it’s very funny. I love Spanish literature.

I think that you ought to also look into The Historian by Elizabeth Kostova, which is set in Eastern Europe and Istanbul and deals with Count Dracula (it’s vampire, yes, but it’s really good- everyone I know who’s read it has been glued to it). You could also take up The Tin Drum by Gunter Grass, which is German and is one of the best-written things that I’ve ever read.

Good luck on your school assignment! I hope that you find a book that you enjoy!

Well, a lot depends on the kind of book you want. If you don’t want anything too heavy, you could go back a bit and try something by Daphne DuMaurier — like Rebecca, or The House on the Strand. You could go WAY back and read something by Jane Austen or one of the Brontes, or Dickens. If you want something modern, then google "young adult foreign fiction" or check into Amazon and see what comes up. I take your point about war. Literature often reflects the time in which it was written, so war would be a popular topic for modern fiction. Oh, there’s a book about Africa that was popular — I think it was called the Poisonwood Bible (I could be wrong) but it was about a modern missionary family in Africa. There’s also Mosquito Coast, about South America.

The Book Thief by Markus Zusak takes place in Nazi Germany during the war, but it is not totally focused on the war. It’s more about a young girl’s life with her foster parents. It’s one of my absolute favorite books and it’s not childish. I know you said you don’t really want war time novels but give it a try. It’s amazing!

The Red and The Black – Stendhal -> it takes place in France. A lot of the French books are very interesting so you should stick to them. As someone mentioned before, there are those books by Agatha Christie, like Death on Nile or Murder on the Orient-Expres that aren’t even long and have the main character Poirot, a French version of Sherlock Holmes. Also, Alexandre Dumas is a very good French writer and if you like adventure books you’ll surely love his books. The problem with French books is tat the first 50 pages or so are pretty boring, but when you get over them, you can’t get enough of the book.
British literature is OK too, there’s Arthur Conan Doyle’s Sherlock Holmes and the books are captivating.
And the Greek legends, if you find a newer version, are fascinating.
